Changing or closing a form
Protect the meaning of existing responses when a form changes.
Fix small wording errors carefully, then save and check the public form. On a published form, changes can affect people immediately.
Once responses exist, keep question names and stored choice values stable. Renaming a question, deleting it, or assigning a new meaning to an old choice can make earlier responses difficult to interpret. Export a copy before a significant revision. For a new round or different questions, make a separate form, review its settings and connections, and check that its Results view has the intended starting state.
Stop accepting responses
- Open Settings and select Deactivated.
- Save and check the form as an ordinary visitor.
- Update the introduction or the page linking to it so people understand that responses are closed.
- Keep the survey available to the team that needs its results.
Deactivation stops answering without being the same as unpublishing the page. Unpublish instead when ordinary visitors should no longer see the page itself. A publication end date can also end public access. Test the intended outcome; do not use an event's date range as a form-closing control.
Closing a form does not erase its responses or revoke downloads and emails. Decide separately which records to retain, export, or delete under your team's handling procedures.
