Add that line to your shell startup file to keep it in new terminals. These package names are documented by <a href=\"https:\/\/formulae.brew.sh\/formula\/erlang@28\">Homebrew for OTP 28<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/formulae.brew.sh\/formula\/postgresql@16\">PostgreSQL 16<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Ubuntu or Debian<\/h3>\n<p>Install the system tools and start PostgreSQL:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"notranslate\"><code class=\"notranslate language-sh\">sudo apt-get update\nsudo apt-get install build-essential git postgresql postgresql-client imagemagick gettext inotify-tools libseccomp-dev\nsudo systemctl start postgresql\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Install <strong>Erlang\/OTP 28<\/strong> using an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erlang.org\/downloads\/28\">OTP 28 installation option<\/a>. Distribution packages differ: do not assume <code>apt-get install erlang<\/code> selects OTP 28. If you do not already have a suitable Erlang package or version manager, the <a href=\"\/id\/3046\">Nix shell<\/a> or <a href=\"\/id\/1411\">container route<\/a> avoids that extra setup.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Check the tools<\/h2>\n<pre class=\"notranslate\"><code class=\"notranslate language-sh\">erl -noshell -eval &#39;io:format(&quot;~s~n&quot;, [erlang:system_info(otp_release)]), halt().&#39;\npsql --version\ngit --version\nmake --version\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>The Erlang check should print <code>28<\/code>. <code>make<\/code> should be GNU Make. Use a supported PostgreSQL release; this walkthrough uses PostgreSQL 16. If a command is missing, fix the installation or shell path before continuing. See <a href=\"\/id\/1530\">Installation requirements<\/a> for optional media tools.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Prepare the database<\/h2>\n<p>Follow <a href=\"\/id\/3045\">Prepare local PostgreSQL<\/a>. It creates the development role and database and checks a connection using the same host and credentials Zotonic will use.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Build and start<\/h2>\n<p>Return to the Zotonic checkout and follow <a href=\"\/id\/2913\">Build and start Zotonic<\/a>, then <a href=\"\/id\/2914\">Create your first site<\/a>.
