[12:23:11] <Maas> Scaling… yes, that depends on what limit you hit. Zotonic is usually an order of magnitude faster than other CMS systems/frameworks. So you will hit the limit much much later. There is a dynamo like version of zotonic available which allows for inside-rack-scaling.
What we learned from this solution was that this kind of scaling is not what we need. It worked very well, but… Things which are simple on a single instance quickly become very difficult. Currently servers are more than fast enough to handle the traffic for 98% of the sites in the world. You can rent a 24 core server with a large amount of ram for < 100 euro per month. I recently did a simple test on one of those. Erlang could do 80.000 hits/sec on it. More than fast enough.
Other things are harder to do, like what to do when the data-center has a problem? Data storage, when you have customer generated content. Delivering content to users all around the world, which means you need globe wide low-latency for your customers. The solution for all these things is not a dynamo-like setup, but something different.
As a result we have plans to implement a federated version of zotonic. It will have a couple of interesting features like: automatic distributed backup, migration of resources, pub/sub between instances, dns-failover, cloud storage of files/backups, usage of small low-cost, low-power systems like. Such a system would allow for vertical partitioning.
